Coming Soon: Louie’s Wine Dive

The Iowa River Landing is pleased to announce the latest addition to this exciting retail, dining, and entertainment district. Louie’s Wine Dive, a restaurant and wine bar with eight current locations throughout the Midwest, is opening a new site in Coralville’s Iowa River Landing, set to open in the fall of 2017. It will be located at the northeast corner of East 9th Street and East 2nd Avenue across from 30hop.

Louie’s Wine Dive offers a full food menu and an impressive wine program, earning positive mentions in USA Today, Wine Tourist Magazine, dsm Magazine, and Iowa Foodie. Co-owners and childhood friends Whitney VinZant and Corey Gonzalez set out to create “a Brooklyn-style, neighborhood restaurant with outstanding scratch food and a major focus on wine.” The restaurant carries 100+ wines with 50–60 offered by the glass — many new to the Iowa market. Louie’s Wine Dive features its trademark Wineboard, wherein our Beverage Director can make up-to-the minute decisions on purchasing unique and often rare wine. The Wineboard changes daily and also offers tremendous value opportunities.

The first Louie’s opened was in Urbandale, Iowa, followed by the Brookside neighborhood in the Kansas City area. Today there are also locations in Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, and Nebraska. Just last week, VinZant announced another new location set for Nashville, Tennessee, making 10 locations total.

The word ‘dive’ refers to the restaurants innovative wine program. “Our objective is — one, to make wine fun. And two, to make unique wine accessible,” said co-owner Whitney VinZant. Louie’s Wine Dive makes it easy for patrons to sample new wines with its policy of offering to open any bottle on the menu if diners agree to purchase two glasses. The bottle is then listed on Louie’s Wine Board, wherein a dutch-auction ensues throughout the shift opening up the possibility of trying a glass at a tremendous value.

“We are truly a ‘scratch kitchen,’” adds VinZant. Each location also features a formally trained executive chef and sous-chef. The menu is derived from Western European cooking methods to create unique creations best described as American non-traditional such as their Four-Pork Gnocchi.

Regular events are an important aspect of the Louie’s Wine Dive experience. Typically, the restaurant hosts four events annually. Each features a customized menu of four to seven courses, with all food prepared by the executive chef. The theme is then paired with wines by the sommelier. The cost for the dinners ranges from $45 to $100 per person.

Louie’s Wine Dive in the Iowa River Landing will include an island bar with an open kitchen, space for private dining, and a patio with outdoor seating where patrons can enjoy wine.

“Coralville/Iowa City is a really progressive community. We’re really excited to offer a fun and non-pretentious perspective on wine and how it’s consumed paired with our creative food,” said VinZant. “When it really gets fun is when we develop relationships with our guests. We look forward to building a unique and enduring restaurant in this marque location in the Iowa River Landing.”

With the previous announcement of Trader Joe’s, also opening in the second half of 2017, significant growth is on the horizon for Coralville’s Iowa River Landing district.

Trader Joe’s to Open Store in Iowa River Landing

Trader Joe's Elevations _ Layout

The Iowa River Landing is pleased to announce the latest addition to this exciting retail, dining, and hospitality district. Trader Joe’s, a unique, neighborhood grocery store with foods and beverages ranging from the everyday to the exotic, has signed a lease for a new location in Coralville scheduled to open second half 2017. The new store is approximately 13,000 square feet and will be located on the Southeast corner of I-80 and 1st Avenue North Coralville’s Iowa River Landing district.

The “Trader” in Trader Joe’s refers to the way the company blazed a distinct trail through the grocery industry, searching the world for great values and distinctive products. Store employees, dubbed “Crew Members,” consider themselves “traders on the culinary seas.” Some Crew Members sport brightly-colored Hawaiian-themed shirts, adding to the friendly and light-hearted air of the store. Many area residents can expect to receive a copy of the Trader Joe’s “Fearless Flyer” in their mailboxes after the store opens. The Fearless Flyer is a somewhat irreverent description of a timely selection of Trader Joe’s products—it’s been called a cross between Consumer Reports and Mad Magazine. Each edition highlights a selection of Trader Joe’s products that the company’s buyers believe are worthy of customer interest, from comfort foods to items that are organic or that boast other special attributes.

Trader Joe’s carries an extensive array of domestic and imported foods and beverages, including artisan breads, Arabica bean coffees, international frozen entrées, 100% juices, fresh crop nuts, deli items, vitamins, and more. Stores also offer customers the basics, like milk and eggs, at honest, low prices.

Trader Joe’s is truly a grocery store unlike any other. Trader Joe’s is a “store of stories,” meaning that every item in the store has its own virtues, like high quality ingredients, great flavor, or simply an extraordinary price—and many items boast all of these attributes. Another significant point of difference is that all of Trader Joe’s prices are everyday prices. Trader Joe’s doesn’t have “sales” for a few days only to hike the prices back up again. Trader Joe’s prices change only when costs change— there are no fancy promotions, discount cards, or couponing wars. So how does Trader Joe’s offer unique groceries at prices everyone can afford? By offering more than 3,000 items under the Trader Joe’s private label, which includes Trader José’s salsas, Trader Ming’s fried rice, Trader Giotto’s marinara sauces, and so many other specially purchased items. Also, Trader Joe’s buys differently than other grocers—they purchase from manufacturers wherever possible, not through distributors. In many cases, they will take a brand-name product, take out the artificial preservatives, artificial flavors, synthetic colors, and other undesirable ingredients and put it under their Trader Joe’s label to offer it at a price that is a real value.

Trader Joe’s introduces approximately a dozen new items every month, heightening the store’s adventurous appeal. Their buyers travel around the world searching for unique products at great values, and in order for an item to be sold at Trader Joe’s, it must endure the scrutiny of a discerning tasting panel. Thousands of items are tasted each year to find products that both appeal to the culinary adventurer and the microwave aficionado.

#######

Trader Joe’s is a chain of neighborhood grocery stores featuring high quality imported and domestic foods and beverages at honest, low prices. Trader Joe’s (www.traderjoes.com) began in 1958 in the Los Angeles area. Since then, Trader Joe’s has expanded to more than 459 stores in 41 states.

Coming Soon! Adeva Salon and High Ground Cafe

We are very excited to announce two new additions to the Iowa River Landing: Adeva Salon and High Ground Cafe.

Adeva Salon

Adeva Salon will be moving from their current location to a new space in the Iowa River Landing before the end of the year.

Adeva Salon has been operating as an Aveda Concept Salon since 2008. The shop currently employs 7 full time staff and is looking to expand their team in the coming year.

“We have a strong belief in education for everyone that works at Adeva. All of our team have been extensively trained on the newest trends and techniques for hair and body care,” said Allisha Wegner, owner of Adeva Salon.

The salon will offer the full line of Aveda Products, including hair, skin care, body care and make-up. Aveda products are made from natural pure flower and plant ingredients that are the high performing with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. Hair services offered at the salon will include color, men’s and women’s haircuts, hairstyling and extensions. Spa services will include Ayurvedic treatments, body waxing, manicure and pedicure treatments, and eyelash extensions.

Wegner feels a salon will be a natural fit for the Iowa River Landing. “We really think the area is great match with the atmosphere of Adeva Salon,” said Wegner. “We are all about community and we feel like the Iowa River Landing is doing a great job of cultivating that environment.”

High Ground Cafe

High Ground Café will open a second location in the Iowa River Landing. The new shop will occupy the space formerly held by Waterstreet Coffee Bar, and owner Wesley Ward anticipates an opening date of November 1st, 2016.

“We’ve had our eye on the Iowa River Landing for a long time,” said Ward. “We’re very excited for this opportunity to expand our reach into Coralville.”

High Ground Café currently operates a shop in downtown Iowa City, with a menu containing coffee, tea, beer, wine, pastries, soups, sandwiches and salads. The second location in the Iowa River Landing will provide many of the same offerings as the downtown location.

“We’re going to start out with the same beverage and pastry menu we serve in our downtown Iowa City location, and are planning to add sandwiches, salads, and soups down the road,” said Ward.

Lindsay Raasch will be the manager of the new High Ground location. Raasch is the former Group Rooms Coordinator at the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, and is looking forward to working with the other shop owners in the area.

“I was able to form a lot of great relationships with the business owners in the Landing through my work at the Marriott,” said Raasch. “I’m looking forward to expanding those relationships and creating new partnership and collaboration opportunities with them.”

We’re very excited for what these two new businesses will bring to the Iowa River Landing! If you’d like to stay up-to-date with all the latest news and information about what’s happening in the Iowa River Landing, you can sign up for our email newsletter and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
